Growing from 0 to 1,800 Subscribers in 1 Month (What I learned)

Growing from 0 to 1,800 Subscribers in 1 Month (what I learned)…

Going from 0 subscribers and ZERO awareness for my personal brand channel to 1,829 subscribers and multiple brand sponsership offers in only my first month was no coincidence.

I KNOW that sounds like a bold claim:

But what if I told you.. it’s not my first rodeo.

If you are just getting started learning about Youtube and the way the algorithm works - these numbers may seem unachievable

But the thing is… These results are achievable

You just need to know the right gameplan for creating content and PACKAGING

Lucky for you… I will be sharing my exact game plan, packaging strategy and lessons I’ve learned from my time expirementing with youtube and helping other creators grow

(Remember I said.. Not my first Rodeo) :)

What you need to know about Youtube

Youtube only cares about 1 thing…

Keeping viewers on the platform as long as possible

Revolutionary concept right?

While this may sound super basic… many new creators don’t have this basic principle engrained into their content creation process

Many new creators focus on these things:

  • Selfish Content - Content that focuses only on pleasing the creator and not made for the audience.

  • Copying What Big Creators are doing - Big Creators have the luxury of using vague titles and terrible thumbnails.. you do not

  • Inconsistency - If you are inconsistent you will not grow.

Over my time working with creators these are the three main reasons I see - for why new creators on youtube don’t grow and aren’t promoted by the algorithm

I will go over each one of these reasons in more depth:

Selfish Content:

The most common of the three mistakes new creators make.

While yes.. Youtube is about self expression and having fun

It can also be the avenue in which you can grow a business and leave a legacy

Many creators fail to realize this and they start creating content that is selfish.

In other words - content that only serves to benefit the creator

If you are creating content as a creative outlet.. this is fine.

If you want to GROW you have to create content that provides value for your audience and not selfish content only for yourself… that comes later.

Here are some examples of “Selfish Focused Content”

  • Vlogmas Episode 2 - baking cookies for the holidays

  • The “Let’s Play” format in Gaming Videos

Here is how you can make those examples “Audience Focused Content”

  • How to bake cookies for the holidays (my secret formula)

  • I played “Insert game” for 100 Hours… (Heres what I found)

Do you see how making these small changes can turn a video idea into “Audience Focused Content” and not “Selfish Focused Content

Copying Big Creators:

A crucial mistake I see ~ is new creators copying big-established creators on Youtube INCORRECTLY

Notice the key word here.. Incorrectly.

Copying what works is the key to success… but copying INCORRECTLY will do you more harm than good.

Have you heard the Phrase “Steal Like an Artist”

This phrase was popularized by Austin Kleon in his book titled “Steal Like an Artist”

This is a great read and highly recommended

Here are a few of my favorite quotes

“If we’re free from the burden of trying to be completely original, we can stop trying to make something out of nothing, and we can embrace influence instead of running away from it.”

Austin Kleon

“The artist is a collector… Your job is to collect good ideas. The more good ideas you collect, the more you can choose from to be influenced by.”

Austin Kleon

“Every new idea is just a mashup or a remix of one or more previous ideas.”

Austin Kleon

If you want to succeed on Youtube you must “Steal like an Artist” and create something unique.. authentic to you and your brand.

I see new creators all the time trying to replicate carbon copies of other videos but since they lack the (Skills) and (Context) they can't execute properly

These Skills were honed by thousands of hours of practice that newer creators just don’t have.

The context is gained from understanding their own unique target audience.

This is where copying INCORRECTLY can do more harm than good

If you copy a video beat by beat.. it will make you seem inauthentic to your audience.. ESPECIALLY IF YOUR VIDEO IS IN THE SAME NICHE

“Steal like an Artist” and create something unique while taking influence and ideas from other creators.

Being Inconsistent

Inconsistency is the downfall of all new creators.

I get it ~ creating content is HARD

But unless you are able to stay consistent posting quality content.. You will not grow

I know that it can be difficult to balance all your outside activities besides Youtube but the simple fact is that

If you are not consistent. Youtube will promote someone that is

Remember when I said that Youtube only cares about keeping people on the platform

If you are not consistently posting content on the platform then Youtube will have no reason to give you impressions and will instead opt to give promotion and impressions to a different creator.

It’s a tough pill to swallow.. but it is the reality of growing on youtube

The Blueprint for Growth

So now that you are familiar with the reasons why new creators don’t grow

Here is my blueprint for my own channel growth.. as well as the blueprint I use for my clients

Step 1: Define your Core

The first step is to define your target audience on Youtube and for your brand.

If you are a gamer: What kind of games do you play? and what kind of people also play those games?

If you are a Cooking Channel: What kind of food do you cook? What part of the world do people enjoy that type of food? What age are you focusing on?

If you are a Reaction Channel: What kind of Content do you React too? What type of people watch the type of videos you react too.

You need to define your core audience even before starting the ideation process for your first video

Step 2: Steal Like an Artist

Go research all the channels in your selected Niche or area of interest.

Find all the channels that are doing well in your niche

Here is the secret though…

Look for channels between the 20k and 75k Subscribers mark and filter their videos through the “Most Popular” and look for the most recent videos that did good from that channel.

This next step is crucial: DO NOT COPY THEIR VIDEO BEAT BY BEAT

You want to “Steal Like an Artist” or in other words.. Take influence and inspiration from the original material and create something unique in your own flavor.

If you copy someone else’s video frame by frame this will not work.. and if you start getting views. The audience will recognize the content as stolen and you will not seem authentic.

TRUST ME.. I have seen channels fall apart from copying others videos beat by beat.

Steal Like an Artist and you will grow.

Step 3: Package your content correctly

Packaging is the most important step for the youtube algorithm to do it’s thing and promote your content.

What is Packaging though?

Packaging is when you wrap up the

  1. Video Concept

  2. Thumbnail

  3. Title

into one product.

Think about your content as a product in a supermarket and youtube as the shelf holding your product.

When you go to the supermarket and are scrolling through the aisle

How do you select your items?

Usually you go the aisle where your product would be and then pick out your item based on the box branding.

For this example let’s use “Salsa” (Me love Salsa)

So you go to the supermarket looking to buy salsa for your dinner tonight

You walk over to the aisle that has the salsas

Once there, you start to walk through the aisle looking at all the different salsas on the shelf.

You have no preference for the type of Salsa you want so you pick out the one that most catches your eye.

This Process here is similar to the way youtube works

Supermarket - Youtube

Aisles- Niches

Brands - Creators

Products on Shelves - Videos

In order for a customer to find the product they are looking for they need to know where the product is located and stored within the store

This is the same process audiences on youtube are doing as well

But instead of stockers stocking the shelves in the supermarket

The youtube algorithm is sorting out the products(videos) and placing them in their correct locations within Youtube

in order for the youtube algorithm to know where to place your content and who to show it too.. you must package your content correctly

Going back to my Salsa Example.. How did the Supermarket Employees know where to place the product within the store

They used the

name of the product

the design of the product

This the same process the youtube algorithm uses

Name of the Product = Video Title

Design of the Product = Thumbnail

In order to have your content promoted by the youtube algorithm you must package it correctly so Youtube can put it in the right location

If I go to a supermarket looking for Salsa and the employees put the salsa in the electronics section how will I ever find what I am looking for?

that is the same with your content

If you give your video a title and thumbnail that does not accurately represent your video then youtube will put it in the wrong place and show it to the wrong customers.

If i’m looking for a new TV and I see salsa in the TV Aisle.. that would make no sense right?

Learn to package your content correctly and only then will youtube start to promote your content to the right people
